Virginia’s Governor Northam Getting the Franken Treatment

February 4, 2019

Virginia’s knickers are in a knot since Big League Politics, a conservative website, revealed that Governor Ralph Northam has a photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook showing two unnamed guys having a beer, one in blackface and one a hooded KKKer.

It’s like watching a replay of the Senator Al Franken (D-MN) lynching over a photo of his hands hovering above a woman’s breasts as a joke.

Big League says it got a tip from a “concerned” citizen and former Northam classmate who was motivated by Northam’s willingness to revise Virginia’s law on late-term abortions. (Northam was a pediatric neurologist before getting into politics.)

The story broke on Friday evening, February 1. Northam, who didn’t own that yearbook, issued an immediate knee-jerk apology before even seeing the photo.

By Saturday morning, Northam had been shown the photo and couldn’t remember being in it. He did recall wearing blackface playing Michael Jackson for a dance contest that same year.

But many prominent Democrats had spent all night binging at the GOP’s orange Kool-Aid stand and started screaming for Northam to resign, including Virginia’s two senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, and Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and most of the Democratic presidential candidates (don’t get me started on the hypocrisy of Kirsten Gillibrand).

Remember, we’re talking about Virginia 1984. I was born and raised up north, but I came to Virginia in 1972 and have always felt some racial undercurrent. It was finally brought to light after the mass shooting in a black South Carolina church raised questions about this whole eternal Confederate allegiance thing.

You can’t separate the South from the Civil War, and Northam was born here.

CBS News also uncovered that Northam had the nickname “Coonman” listed in his Virginia Military Institute yearbook. Strike two.

Mocking and persecuting races is unconscionable. Period. But given that Trump spews racist garbage like a fire hose to keep his base’s bigotry roiling and nobody does anything to stop it, I don’t think Northam should be drawn and quartered over a 35-year-old photo whose origin he questions, especially since he’s long proven himself to be a progressive Democrat with no discriminatory agenda.

What’s infuriating is seeing Democrats take the GOP bait AGAIN. Wasn’t sacrificing Franken enough?

Northam will probably end up resigning because it’s hard to govern through tar and feathers. Democrats are drooling to have Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax step in and take over. He happens to be black. The optics would be wonderful.

I think Democrats’ time would be better spent focused on ejecting the raving racist from the White House and white supremacist Steve King (R-IA) from Congress. How about fighting GOP efforts to rig elections by gerrymandering, discriminating against and disenfranchising black voters?

If Democrats don’t stop caving over stupid stuff, they can be sure the GOP won’t stop at Northam’s scalp.

I’m sure bottom-feeding conservatives can find in old southern yearbooks Confederate flags, blackface and KKK homages galore. If you were white and grew up down here, you were marinated in Civil War atrocities inflicted on your ancestors and you didn’t lose any sleep over slavery. Richmond’s Monument Avenue still has all its magnificent statues of Confederate generals intact.

I don’t mind leaving the statues there, by the way. They’re part of history and have no significance unless you can’t find enough injustice happening today to fester over. They’re like Ralph Northam’s old yearbooks. Irrelevant relics of the past.

Democrats have given the GOP a taste of blood. If Governor Northam can be destroyed so easily with a whiff of something rotten, there’s plenty more where that came from. Then the GOP can just sit back, sip their orange Kool-Aid, and watch Dems devour each other.

Lose the Confederate Flag, Keep the Statues

I moved to Richmond, Virginia, from the North 43 years ago this month, and it only recently hit me that I’ve been here nearly one-third of the time the Civil War has been over, and I’ve been reminded of it nearly every blessed day and resented it every time.

After the Charleston shootings, words can’t describe how thrilled I was to see some Southern states begin rethinking the preservation of their blockheaded “heritage” and getting with the 21st century.

In Alabama, without asking anybody’s permission, the Republican governor ordered four Confederate flags removed from the statehouse grounds. Amazing!

In VIRGINIA, our Democratic governor, Terry McAuliffe, ordered Confederate flag license plate issued only to the Sons of Confederate Veterans discontinued and all such plates in use (1,600) replaced. Hallelujah!

The plates were a small gesture, yet the SCV have vowed to fight it — even after the exact case in Texas recently went to the Supreme Court and LOST. (That old, “The South shall rise again!” mentality.)

OK, the flag once stood for the Glorious Cause, but the SCV refuse to acknowledge it’s been hijacked by racists, and racism is what it stands squarely for today.

Some Southerners are wringing their hands over the flag, saying it’s a slippery slope, and what comes down next?

Richmond has a big statue of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, on Monument Avenue (more on that in a sec) that just got defaced twice. One guy spray-painted an “L” on it to signify “Loser” (which was pretty “Lame”). Someone else painted “Black Lives Matter.”

Monument Avenue is a beautiful tree-lined boulevard with a wide green median, lined with lavish, historic homes and dotted with impressive statues of prominent Civil War figures like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback.

It also has one odd, puny statue of black Richmond native and tennis great, Arthur Ashe, who’s posed as if lobbing a book to a bunch of sawed-off kids. Trust me, getting him on Monument Avenue caused everyone no end of angst.

Anyway, people are worried these statues will get torn down à la Saddam Hussein in Baghdad.

If that happens, are statues of slave owners George Washington and Thomas Jefferson safe?

I’d say the distinction is that the statues haven’t been embraced as racist symbols. They’re of people who played key roles in significant events in our past.

Let’s leave the statues of major historical figures alone. They don’t bother anybody, and in most cases they’re works of art that attract tourists and may be a comfort to some.

But statues and busts of relatively minor figures, like Nathan Bedford Forrest who helped start the KKK, belong in museums as curiosities.

Even though all the funerals in Charleston are over, I hope the South keeps progressing toward accepting that the United States is one country again, founded on the principle that all men are created equal — in spite our many, many lapses and some people’s lingering refusal to face it.

Florida has Worn Out its Welcome

Enough’s enough. First, they were too stupid to read a ballot and we ended up with Bush, Cheney, and two pointless wars.

Then they decreed it A-OK to whack inconvenient kids who cramp mom’s social life. They wasted big taxpayer bucks pretending to care about missing Kaylee Anthony while mom Casey lied and lied. And after all that, the jury said, “Screw the kid. Sorry to have bothered you, Casey. Live long and prosper!”

And NOW they’ve given overzealous Barney Fife types like George Zimmerman carte blanche to chase down and kill anybody they ironically deem “off” and call it self-defense.

It’s time to let Florida become the lawless frontier it aspires to be. Let them elect their own village idiot (Zimmerman, perhaps?) to preside over them killing each other into extinction.

The “not guilty” verdict delivered in the George Zimmerman trial was jaw-dropping, but unsurprising. It’s precisely the kind of stupid we’ve come to expect from Florida’s residents.

How on earth, when given this scenario…

  • Man trolls neighborhood with a loaded gun, looking for trouble.
  • Man spots black kid on foot and assumes he’s up to no good,
  • Man recorded by police lumping the boy in with other “f**king punks” who have caused trouble, although he doesn’t know the boy from Adam.
  • Man disobeys police dispatcher’s request not to follow the boy.
  • Man gets out of his truck anyway and somehow comes face-to-face with the boy, who turns out to be taller and stronger.
  • Man shoots boy to death.

…did they decide Zimmerman did absofuckinglutely NOTHING WRONG??!!

And now Zimmerman can go back on the streets — with the very gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin. They’re giving it back to him.

Every armed racist must be strutting a little bit taller. Getting away with cold-blooded, unprovoked murder just got a lot easier.

This country has its problems, but letting Florida lower the collective IQ and become the poster state for mayhem shouldn’t be among them.

I say, cut Florida loose. Let it become North America’s sovereign mecca for murderers, child molesters, pornographers — you name it. Let them flourish under the vast protections afforded by Florida’s joke of a judicial system.

Let every George Zimmerman wannabe flock there and prowl Florida’s streets in search of blood to shed. Murder can henceforth be called “keeping the peace.”

And heaven help any innocent souls who don’t have the sense to flee. Sooner or later you’ll do something Barney finds heinous, like buy Skittles, and end up dead like Trayvon — and rotsa ruck finding anybody to give a damn.

Happy hunting, George!

Black Cats Must Stick Together

July 23, 2010

I was surprised when President Obama was so quick to join in and brand Georgia USDA employee (and black cat) Shirley Sherrod a racist and let her be forced into resigning, thanks to white conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart publishing on BigGovernment.com an out-of-context clip from a speech Serrod delivered in March to the NAACP.

Breitbart is upset that the NAACP thinks Tea Partiers are a bunch of racists. His brilliant way of refuting that assertion was to deliberately distort a black woman’s words and try to destroy her lifelong career of helping people in need.

Nothing hateful or racist about that.

Since the truth came out that Sherrod’s speech was really about seeing the light, Breitbart has been saying he’s not after her, but the NAACP. He keeps insisting the audience approved when Sherrod said felt biased against a white farmer 24 years ago. This was before she worked for the USDA.

Slate has dissected the whole incident beautifully, so there’s no need to repeat it all here.

As it turned out, despite her misgivings, Sherrod did help the farmer keep his land by hooking him up with a white attorney. So what’s Brietbart’s point? The attorney should have been black?

Sherrod and the farmer even became friends and he says he’s grateful to her and thinks she should keep her job.

So now Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Obama himself have personally apologized to Sherrod, and they’ve created an even better job specifically for her in the Dept. of Agriculture.

Sherrod is saying she needs to think about it, but I’m thinking she’ll take it.

On Fox News, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter said Breitbart was deliberately “set up” when someone sent him only that clip of Sherrod’s speech, conveniently omitting that Breitbart took it and ran with it with malicious intent without seeing the rest of the speech.

Once again, the Tea Party comes off looking like a rabble of “angry white people.” Instead of destroying Shirley Sherrod’s career, they’ve handed her a promotion on a silver platter.

It makes this black cat feel good.
