Response to Newtown Incomprehensible — Yet Predictable

December 17, 2012

By Cole

Twenty little kids and 6 adults get mowed down by a deranged punk, giving 26 families the gift of burying their bullet-riddled loved ones at Christmas, and it only takes 2 days for Republicans to say the way to end the senseless butchery is…

MORE GUNS.

Former Education Secretary Bill Bennett thinks schools should be armed.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) “wished to God” that the principal had an M-4 assault rifle so she could have taken Adam Lanza’s “head off” before he killed her.

I bet the NRA is raining bribes on its Congressional lackeys to advocate target practice for kindergarteners so they can learn to defend themselves (and grow up to be gun-owners).

The irony is lost on them that Adam’s mother, Nancy, collected guns and taught her son to shoot so he could pump Mom’s head full of lead with her own weapon before he traipsed off with more of her guns to commit a massacre.

Yes, it certainly makes sense to put more guns in homes. NOT.

The FBI reports gun sales at an all-time high, yet gun ownership is in decline, which means Nancy Lanza types are on the rise.

President Obama seems sufficiently shaken up by this latest atrocity to confront this problem head-on.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) intends to introduce legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban.

Even the NRA’s darling Democratic senator, Joe Manchin (D-WVa), is willing to consider banning assault weapons.

It’s a start, but the country needs a seismic culture shift. In addition to choking off the free flow of weapons to anybody who wants one…

The media can stop glorifying murderous scum with 24/7 coverage of their carnage.

We need to recognize that young adults are oblivious to violence. They see it on TV (real and scripted) and in movies. They practice mass murder in video games. Horrors of greater magnitude than Newtown happen daily around the world — and American kids have no clue. Just like Mom and Dad.

ALL adults need to regain their sense of outrage at violence — for sport or otherwise — and start doing something about it.

They need to gather up and destroy as many weapons as they can. They need to lock up the bullets — or tax the hell out of them so to shoot anything means missing a mortgage or car payment.

People need to put down the smartphones and stop ignoring or shrugging off the potential killers and their copycats. The signs are almost always there. These nuts need to be taken out of circulation.

Every time we have a Columbine, a Virginia Tech, an Aurora, a Newtown, and people do nothing but light candles, cry, and pray (and re-elect politicians who’d rather have regular massacres than give up their right to carry double-barreled penis extensions), Americans show the world what a bunch of craven, ignorant barbarians we are.

Without drastic gun control NOW, Washington may as well can the debate over the fiscal cliff and the future of this country. It won’t have one.

Washington Goes Limp on Assault Weapons

July 24, 2012

By Cole

Obama and Boehner have agreed not to push for new gun control legislation in the wake of the Aurora, Colorado, massacre “allegedly” carried out by that Bozo-headed whack-job, James Holmes.

How many more innocent people must be mowed down to get Washington’s attention? Our elected officials all seem to share a smug certainty that no AK-47-wielding maniac who’s had enough of their self-serving bullshit will ever confront them.

It would appear that gun lobby contributions mean more to them than the safety and lives of the entire American population.

True to form, conservatives howl, “If you outlaw assault weapons again, you trample our FREEDOM!”

Freedom to do what? Murder in multiples? Anybody who thinks this is a defensible argument needs to be stood up against a wall and shot. Hey, live by the gun, die by the gun.

Other conservatives say the problem is that people don’t own ENOUGH guns.

Dudley Brown, executive director of the gun advocacy group Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said, “If I only had 6,000 rounds for my AR-15s [like Holmes did], I’d literally feel naked.” And assessing Holmes’ stash, he said, “Two handguns, a shotgun and a rifle. That’s the average male in Colorado.”

So why wasn’t some “average male” packing heat in that theater and take down Holmes, or at least wound his firing arm? We haven’t heard from one armed moviegoer that night who regrets not wasting that punk and saving lives.

There’s a reason. Amidst chaos, it would take an extraordinary, highly-trained marksman with steely presence of mind to actually shoot the perp, rather than hit the screaming victims running around.

In most situations, I imagine it would be impossible.

As always, a glaring fact conservatives refuse to face is that “freedom” to buy weapons also applies to crazy people. According to them, nuts need more rights, but society doesn’t deserve the right not to arm insane killers.

Obama and Boehner need to grow a pair and reinstate the ban on assault weapons, and let the NRA be damned.

For the guns that are left, screw background checks. Before anybody can buy a gun, there should be a minimum 100 hours of mandatory firearms training, with psychiatric evaluation. And if the person fails to pass both parts with flying colors, no gun.

This would go far in weeding out other delusional limp-dicks, inspired by Cho, Loughner, and Holmes, who think godhood is theirs with the flick of a trigger finger, and put guns in the hands of people who know how to use them — for the right reasons.

Breivik, Zimmerman: Birds of a Feather

April 18, 2012

By Cole

It’s an unfortunate bit of timing for Florida gunman George Zimmerman that Norway’s most infamous mass-murderer, Anders Breivik, is on trial now. Breivik is claiming he killed 77 people in “self-defense.”

Scandinavians on the whole tend to be more open to abstract notions like mental illness — and other concepts that involve tolerance for human frailty — like healthcare for everyone, helping the poor, accepting homosexuals, and not letting every nut own a gun.

So after they’ve given Breivik the opportunity to deliver his unapologetic, long-winded rant about his reasons, which he hopes will prove that he’s not crazy, the Norwegian court may rule that anyone who arms himself to pursue strangers going about their business who have never harmed him or anyone he knows, and mows them down on the mere chance that they someday might harm him, is indeed crazy.

Breivik apparently thinks he was protecting Norway from a Muslim invasion, justifying his killing on such a grand scale.

Zimmerman thinks he was protecting only his gated community, so he killed just one teenager — Trayvon Martin.

But the rationale behind both men’s behavior was EXACTLY the same.

Given the U.S.’s lack of gun control, under the right circumstances and delusions of peril, could any Zimmerman type go “Breivik”?

I say yes.

If Zimmerman isn’t found guilty of 2nd-degree murder, at the very least he should be deemed insane for thinking he needed a gun at the grocery store — his original destination.

To all you shooting enthusiasts out there (Cheney and NRA members, I’m looking at you), you might want to get a better grip on the difference between “defense” and “offense” before you point your ill-gotten, yet constitutionally-protected, weapons at your next victims.
