The South Finally Gets Real

By Cole

In my nine lives, I never thought I’d see the South accept the fact that the Civil War is over, that most of us are sick of hearing about it already, and that the Confederate flag has become nothing but the American Swastika.

It must be a real punch in the gut to Dylann Roof to see that massacring nine innocent black strangers didn’t start a new race war, but gave blacks and whites reason to bond. And that bonding comes thanks to the victims’ families, who displayed superhuman grace and forgiveness when they were asked to tell Roof what they think of him.

Their utter refusal to take his hate-bait freed whites to finally admit that their obsolete flag belongs in a museum — not atop or near any government building that purports to represent all citizens.

Hot as it is around here, we’ve now got a snowball rolling downhill. Mississippi is thinking twice about the Confederate stars and bars in its state flag. Tennessee may remove a bust of Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest from its statehouse.

Even Walmart is pulling all Confederate-themed merchandise from its shelves. Let’s hope other retail chains follow. If racist punks with an imaginary axe to grind want to rock that rebel look, let them sew it or draw it themselves.

May this phenomenal progress continue until mentioning the Civil War in a way that implies it was anything but a horrible, embarrassing mistake labels the speaker an ignorant bigot.

Certainly, the South can keep laying flowers on the graves of its Confederate dead. It can even admire the bravery of those who gave their lives. But it can also have the decency to admit they died in a self-serving attempt to continue degrading and exploiting people who had done nothing to deserve such treatment, and any claim to the contrary is just revisionist thinking.

It’s time for the South to free itself from the shackles of its history so everyone can feel welcome here — even Karen.

Well said! Enough is enough. Most people don’t know the difference between a Democracy and a Democratic Republic. Pure democracy is anarchy the rule of mob. While a Democratic Republic enacts and enforces the rule of law through the election process.
This unending back and forth about State law is phooey. If these states that fear the intervention of BIG GOVERNMENT, for the sake of keeping their rights to own weapons that tear, and rip and bloody kill humans, is nuts!
The right to own arms was intended to raise a militia against an oppressive overlord, in our case England.

All these confederate flag waving states need to admit they are part of our union. You know the one that pays for highways, bridges, roads, schools and of yeah Health Care.
Nya,, Nya , we won again definitively in the Supreme Court. Live with it! People like me can now afford healthcare. Thank you Obamacare.

As for the flag thing would these same confederate state houses be willing to fly ummm the Rainbow flag or a Black power flag?
Eat it.. We all have one flag the red, white and blue. One I am proud to acknowledge.

On and for the record… The north kicked the secessionists collective ass. Give up already or leave MY country. Nobody is forcing you to stay.

Morgan, spoken like a true Yankee. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

It IS time for the South to get over it already, and many Southerners are facing that fact. Unfortunately, the legislators in, of all places, South Carolina, seem not to have gotten the memo. Some woman crawled up their flagpole and took down that offensive Confederate Flag, only to get herself arrested. They immediately put the flag back up, and Larry Wilmore showed a photo where they had a black guy doing it!!

Why? Because they haven’t gotten around to talking about maybe taking the flag down. Forgive me if I come off like a fan-boy of Larry Wilmore, but soon after the Charleston massacre, he said that SC legislators should take down that damned flag IMMEDIATELY (since they hadn’t held the funerals for the victims yet and Obama was coming to call) and then schedule a time at their sweet convenience to debate whether or not to put it back up.

And let’s admit the right to own guns is the frustrated left over from the right to own slaves. Again a states right issue that the Civil War ended once and for all. The engine of slavery was the souths and indeed the country’s biggest economic asset.
Let’s just say the gun thing is an extension of thst argument.
Again I say, if you don’t want to be a member of our inclusive country who’s keeping you here?

Uhh let me reprise an old tome …MY COUNTRY LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!
Ironic that I a progressive can use that phrase no?

Morgan, if you tell almost any Southerner that the Civil War was over slavery, you will be told, “Well, Northerners had slaves, too!” as if that made it all right.

They are reluctant to admit that the North knew it was wrong, and it wasn’t the North who tore the country in half trying to continue the practice.

Just as people saw owning human beings as a God-given right, they see owning guns. I think it’s a matter of control. If you can’t dominate those you secretly fear, then at least have the means to kill them.

If anybody could ever get to the heart of the right-to-bear-arms debate, in many cases they would find racism.

And I believe Donald Trump’s rise in the latest polls is proof of our lack of progress on that front. Now that bigotry toward blacks is being vilified even in the South, the racists are redirecting their aggression toward Mexicans and Trump is their new poster boy.

Even racists can change, Forrest was a redeemed KKK leader. Does that part matter or not?

The once-hardened soldier became a born-again Christian, and the ferocity that previously had marked his personality was transformed into a mild-mannered, kindly, meekness as he called for the KKK to disband, and spoke out in favor of black civil rights. – See more at: http://columbiadailyherald.com/opinion/letters-editor/case-nathan-bedford-forrest#sthash.138hiZ7Y.dpuf
