Buh-Bye, Sebelius

By Karen

Sometimes wishes do come true. Kathleen Sebelius, who personified ineptness in implementing the Affordable Care Act, is out. Obama actually had the nerve to lament that he’ll miss her “advice.”

And House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Sebelius a “forceful, effective, and essential” secretary.

Have they both been in a coma?

It’s regrettable that Sebelius was allowed to resign rather than get the boot to the backside she so richly deserved. But Obama seems eager to forget that on her watch, Healthcare.gov not only ran over budget by hundreds of millions of dollars, but the result was such a pathetic mess that it almost sank the whole initiative, it brought disgrace on the White House, and gave Republicans reason to dance with delight.

But, whatever. Good riddance. She’s gone.

Then Obama immediately taps Sylvia Burwell, his budget person, to replace Sebelius, calling her a “proven manager,” whatever the hell that means.

Burwell’s background shows no indication she’ll have any more ability than Sebelius to deal with what’s looming next for Obamacare — that people are going to find out they’re paying for insurance AND a lot of the medical bills they thought it would cover, and that it’s probably going to cost them a lot more next year.

According to the AP, when she wasn’t a budget bureaucrat, Burwell “served as president of Wal-Mart’s charitable arm and led the global development program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.”

She may know something about nonprofits and worldwide health issues, but that doesn’t sound like squat when it comes to outsmarting greedy American insurance companies, which is what the administration has so far failed to do, except for eliminating lifetime caps and pre-existing condition exclusions.

I’d be willing to bet Burwell won’t have a good grasp on how the IT infrastructure that supports Healthcare.gov is supposed to work, either.

Like most CEOs, Obama’s probably thinks the agency’s head honcho doesn’t need to know the nitty-gritty. Like Sebelius, she’ll rely on “people” to handle the details.

Because that worked so well before.

Obama seems to be hanging his hat on the fact Burwell’s unanimous Senate approval for her current job now qualifies her to take on ANY position he cares to toss her in to.

And once again, he shows us he STILL doesn’t get the seriousness of this situation and the lives it has the power to ruin — financially and medically.

The hasty appointing of Burwell to steer us through the looming insurance quagmire Obama’s created reminds me of his feckless selection of big campaign donors to be ambassadors to countries they’ve never visited and know nothing about.

The insurance companies must be thrilled with this development.

Right when the website was first created and had all the problems, there was a great New Yorker cover of Obama and Sibelius staring at an old fashioned computer that didn’t even have a flat screen — they had looks of complete wonderment on their faces.

I hate to say it, but what Obama really lacks is cojones. He couldn’t go up against the insurance companies. In fact he’s never confronted much of anything, although he IS comfortable ordering drone strikes from a safe difference. I’m always cynical about American politics, but I did allow myself a faint moment of hope before he was elected. He turns out to be “Mr.Let the Market Sort Itself Out” on many issues; I wonder whatever happened to the community organizer in him; he should have known from his days on the south side of Chicago, that the system really only works for the rich.

I just finished watching House of Cards, and have spent 24 episodes of a political couple, who will stop at nothing to feed their political ambitions.I believe the depiction is rather extreme, but there is a ring of truth. Or, as a friend of mine says, “Anyone, who really wants to be president, probably shouldn’t be.”

Adele, I thought I hated George Bush (actually, both of them), but Obama is blowing them out of memory. I can hardly stand to LOOK at him, let alone listen to him. He’s so full of bullshit to make himself look less incompetent, it’s unbelievable. And to think I voted for him TWICE.

He’s turning me into a Republican (except for the denial of reality) and I HATE him for it.

I wouldn’t put it past Putin to try to retake all of Ukraine just as a kick to Obama’s nonexistent balls.

The next presidential election can’t come soon enough.

I can’t believe my fingers, but I’m finding that W.wasn’t all….that….bad. I actually like his paintings and I would like to own what I refer to as “Still Life In Bathtub”

ZM, some days I actually find myself missing W, if it weren’t for the package deal with Cheney. Now that the presidency is behind him, Dubya turns out to be a stitch — deliberately. Who knew? He was on Leno one night spewing great one-liners in rapid fire.

I love his painting of Putin. He really captured the icy soullessness of the guy. In fact, I was just reading where a 6-year-old girl asked Putin if he thought Obama would rescue him if Putin were drowning. Putin answered yes, because Obama’s a decent kind of guy.

But if Putin and Obama ever found themselves in a boat together, I think we all know Obama would end up sleeping with the fishes.

Ben Carson? I had to Google him. I’ve never heard of him before. Looks interesting, but he seems a bit too right-wing from what little I found on him.

The IT debacle is clown politics at its worst and shame on the President. He should just get the guys who run all these porn sites on board. THEY seem to get it done.

Bur we all knew this was NEVER gonna be easy. There’s a long way to go and the Republicans are hurling everything they have at overruling affordable healthcare for all. After all, protecting GM against criminal charges for killing hundreds with defective cars nine years after they documented the problems, and making sure huuuuge bonuses are paid to big business CEO s , who never face criminal charges is a bit time consuming, never mind making sure the NRA gun nuts have the right to kill/slaughter at will.

I don’t care about the NSA, as long as they continue to get these fucks. Please listen in on all my data….if it keeps me safe from bearded godless women hating extremists ..I’m in.

I’m in the middle of the health care debacle …it’s killing me , yet I’m willing to give it a chance. Let’s not forget Dubya ia a war criminal and Obama inherited his shitstorm. So it’s time to reroute that money home to take care of our own. Do you think the Tea Party is going to protect women? Rape is consensual? Abortion can take care of itself? There are too many self loathing women hating, racists hiding under the Republican mantle.

I’ll take my chances with Hillary..thank you.

That fat Christie gave back the federal healthcare funds robbing me of a tax credit and effectively removing New Jersey from the healthcare marketplace so now the two big players in Jersey, Aetna and Horizon ( who’s CEO gotta 25 million dollars bonus a few years back under Christies plan while he plundered the teachers union) are free to double their rates and they did.

Obama isn’t Christ. There is much left to do, but he’s not the devil either.

Morgan, I see Obama now as any other sleazeball politician. In his heart he wants to do right by people, but he can’t resist getting sucked into the gutter with the rest of the lying, self-serving scumbags of both parties.

Today Biden’s promising financial aid to Ukraine. How does that go? “Don’t worry, we’ll borrow more and dig the hole a little deeper for American taxpayers and hand the cash over to you.”

Meanwhile, Putin’s got poorly disguised soldiers taking over government buildings. What’s next? Steal all the artwork? Round up anybody who considers themselves Ukranian and consign them to concentration camps in Siberia? Putin conquers while the world stands by and twiddles.

Virginia’s in the same boat at NJ on healthcare, but now we have a Democratic governor who’s trying to do the right thing, although the Republican General Assembly is fighting him all the way. Anthem has the stranglehold here.

And today’s paper reported that the ACA really didn’t make much of a dent in covering the uninsured because it’s much cheaper for them to pay the piddly penalty and keep going to the ER, which is probably all many of them can afford anyway. And it remains to be seen how many people who bought the sucker low-premium high-deductible policies on Healthcare.gov will end up filing medical bankruptcy when they need to use the insurance.

  9. MorganLF says:

But those fines double and redouble every year. At some point it will be a forced consensus, work with benefits or get a policy or pay a ridiculous fine. Soo for all the sucks…Get a JOB !

I am unclear why we are involved In the Ukraine, excepting the fact that we we are the most powerful and wealthy country in the world. No small feat for a new (relatively) Democratic republic.

I suppose we are the father, and what that self aggrandizing, throw back, Mental patient, Khaddaffi wannabe, asshole Putin is trying to do is compare his dick to our Presidents assumed huge one.

Sebastopol is a huge strategic seaport and base. Putin will not let it go. I need to know why this is our concern. The Ukraine is not our business.

But as the Mac daddy we ( our president) is expected to take a position. It’s called diplomacy. I wish he would tell these cretins to eat shit. We have wayy more things to do at home.

  10. catsworking says:

Morgan, Cole just put out a post on this situation. While we totally agree with you that Ukraine is not directly our problem, the world can’t afford to let Putin continue thinking he’s Alexander the Great reincarnated. The guys nuts and needs to be stopped in his tracks NOW. Unfortunately, as screwed up as the U.S. is internally, other countries still look to us to take the lead. Obama’s got Kerry out there swinging a limp dick around and Putin’s just laughing at it.
