Washington Goes Limp on Assault Weapons

By Cole

Obama and Boehner have agreed not to push for new gun control legislation in the wake of the Aurora, Colorado, massacre “allegedly” carried out by that Bozo-headed whack-job, James Holmes.

How many more innocent people must be mowed down to get Washington’s attention? Our elected officials all seem to share a smug certainty that no AK-47-wielding maniac who’s had enough of their self-serving bullshit will ever confront them.

It would appear that gun lobby contributions mean more to them than the safety and lives of the entire American population.

True to form, conservatives howl, “If you outlaw assault weapons again, you trample our FREEDOM!”

Freedom to do what? Murder in multiples? Anybody who thinks this is a defensible argument needs to be stood up against a wall and shot. Hey, live by the gun, die by the gun.

Other conservatives say the problem is that people don’t own ENOUGH guns.

Dudley Brown, executive director of the gun advocacy group Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said, “If I only had 6,000 rounds for my AR-15s [like Holmes did], I’d literally feel naked.” And assessing Holmes’ stash, he said, “Two handguns, a shotgun and a rifle. That’s the average male in Colorado.”

So why wasn’t some “average male” packing heat in that theater and take down Holmes, or at least wound his firing arm? We haven’t heard from one armed moviegoer that night who regrets not wasting that punk and saving lives.

There’s a reason. Amidst chaos, it would take an extraordinary, highly-trained marksman with steely presence of mind to actually shoot the perp, rather than hit the screaming victims running around.

In most situations, I imagine it would be impossible.

As always, a glaring fact conservatives refuse to face is that “freedom” to buy weapons also applies to crazy people. According to them, nuts need more rights, but society doesn’t deserve the right not to arm insane killers.

Obama and Boehner need to grow a pair and reinstate the ban on assault weapons, and let the NRA be damned.

For the guns that are left, screw background checks. Before anybody can buy a gun, there should be a minimum 100 hours of mandatory firearms training, with psychiatric evaluation. And if the person fails to pass both parts with flying colors, no gun.

This would go far in weeding out other delusional limp-dicks, inspired by Cho, Loughner, and Holmes, who think godhood is theirs with the flick of a trigger finger, and put guns in the hands of people who know how to use them — for the right reasons.

Karen, you hit the nail on the head.Or rather, you shot it through the eye.My gun-owning friends(for “protection”)feel that they are safe because they have a gun(s) with which they can frighten off an intruder.Waking up in the middle of the night with adrenalin flooding through you,you are going to calmly level a gun at a stranger in your house….oops…too late, you’re dead!

ZM, I keep a putter by the bed. One night I was practicing my swing and put a deep dent at eye level in the doorframe. Guess if I could surprise an intruder entering the bedroom and nail him in the head, it would bring him down.

We don’t have a problem with people owning guns. Our problem is that too many of them DON’T KNOW HOW TO USE GUNS, or they are mentally ill-equipped to deal with the responsibility (see all the kids who shoot themselves playing with loaded guns left around the house).

Sadly, I suspect the majority of the people screaming loudest about losing their “freedom” to bear arms are the ones I’m talking about.

Cole says he wouldn’t mind see a national test instituted for gun owners (like the SOLs). If they can’t shoot straight and hit a target under pressure, and they can’t pass a simple intelligence/psychological evaluation related to why they own a gun, they get all their weapons confiscated.

  3. Bacardi1 says:

Oh I SO agree. Virginia (at least the rural areas like where I live) aren’t that far behind Colorado. And the gun-owning stupidity level is ridiculously high around here. Hunting season (basically Oct. to Jan.) is pretty much “everyone for themself for humans and livestock”. Last time I was able to safely & thoroughly enjoy a nice autumn day was back when I lived in LI, NY.

  4. catsworking says:

Bacardi, guns are only slightly more regulated than childbirth. Any idiot who can lie still long enough to get pregnant can pop out a kid. Just yesterday we watched some enchanting video of Bristol Palin’s toddler Tripp calling his aunt Willow a “faggot.”

    Video: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/22/tripp-palin-faggot-gay-slur-bristol-palin-_n_1693681.html

The bigot doesn’t fall far from the tree. But Bristol has apparently claimed Tripp really said “fuck it.” That’s SO much better.

Being out in the woods during hunting season must be hair-raising. You have our condolences.

  5. Bacardi1 says:

Oh believe me – I am NOT out in the woods during hunting season, as much as I’d love being able to enjoy the cooler weather & lovely colors. My only time outside is attempting to make sure my horses don’t get shot by some drunken gun-wielding redneck moron thinking they’re deer.

  6. catsworking says:

Bacardi, we’ve read about enough cases of people and pets being shot in their own backyards by stupid hunters to know it’s a fact of life (and death) during hunting season.

I say, we give guns and orange vests to all the deer and make it a fair fight.

  7. Db says:

Why did some average heat-packing citizen shoot Holmes?

Simple, you buffoon: the theater bans firearms. So every law-abiding citizen was disarmed.

  8. catsworking says:

Welcome, Db. We just love it when some newbie from nowhere jumps into the conversation with a personal insult.

We don’t know the gun laws in Colorado. In Virginia, I’m pretty sure it’s perfectly legal to carry a gun, concealed or openly, into a theater unless the theater specifically posts a sign prohibiting firearms.

That said, we also haven’t heard that the cars in the Aurora parking lot were loaded (pardon the pun) with weapons movie patrons had left behind to go inside the theater. So far, not one survivor that we know of has regretted not having his/her piece handy to blow Holmes away.

I stand by my contention that 99.9% of armed “law-abiding citizens” aren’t good enough shots to take down a madman in a dark movie theater in the midst of 200 people and total chaos without adding to the death toll.

But we appreciate your desire to legally contribute to the mayhem.

Db you tool…..you simpleton…. You tool!!!!!!

Why are assault weapons that fire off one thousand rounds a minute legal?

Ass hat those guns have one purpose : kill in war never self defense. Or do we hunt possum with weapons of such severe CFO sequences these days?

Stop the NRA Obama please step up!!

  10. catsworking says:

Morgan, was reading something somewhere the other day that said a majority of Americans are in favor of stricter gun control because they’re sick of all the killing.

Yet our politicians tip-toe around the issue, afraid to piss off the NRA. WHY? Because the NRA has deep pockets and GUNS.

“Here, take this campaign contribution and do what we say, by God, or we’re sending you to meet Jesus.”

  11. annie pelfrey says:

the real issue is ignoring the signs of mental instability in a person BEFORE he commits mayhem.

  12. catsworking says:

Annie, I totally agree with this. We need to catch the nuts early. So why do many Republicans oppose funding for better mental healthcare, and even go so far as refuse to acknowledge that anything brain-related is an illness? AND think it’s fine and dandy to let the mentally unstable (yet undiagnosed) have ready access to assault weapons?

  13. annie pelfrey says:

i never understood why dental and psychological problems are treated as anything but “medical”.
any crazy or criminal person will find a way to get weapon of choice.
all the signs were there with Cho at Tech (it’s human and animal intuition that another isn’t quite normal- so you stay away from that being) yet his family ignored his behavior (or were scared by it)-the school dismissed the concerns of students and teachers. maybe because it’s politically incorrect.

  14. catsworking says:

Annie, I think you hit the nail on the head. Denial is the easy way to go. Just pretend the nut is normal and hope for the best. And then count the bodies later.

I’ll add one more to the pile of things that aren’t considered “medical.” Foot problems. MDs like to laugh at podiatrists because they aren’t “real” doctors. And I’m willing to bet that a lot of health insurers would deny claims for corrective foot surgery that enables someone to walk pain-free because they’d deem it “cosmetic.”

Personally, I think insurance companies are behind a lot of medical discrimination. Deny enough claims for something and word gets around that it isn’t really considered an illness.

  15. annie pelfrey says:

scares me we are polar opposites politically, yet agree on the nuts and bolts of some things!

  16. catsworking says:

Annie, there’s a bedrock of common sense that runs through people of all political stripes who aren’t totally brain-dead. It’s the extremists on both sides who throw facts to the wind who give the parties they claim to love so much a bad name. They are black-and-white thinkers who refuse to accept anything in between. Troublemakers like Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly, Hannity appeal to this crowd and because they have national media platforms, they make everyone on their side look nuts because the sensible people either don’t speak up or get bullied into shutting up.

I can’t think of a single Democratic media spokesperson who’s as popular as the 4 I just named who’s out there vilifying Republicans all the time. And Democrats don’t have a blanket derogatory nickname for Republicans, the way Repubs. refuse to say “Democratic party,” but use “Democrat party” as an insult. Even Romney does it, and it only makes him look like a childish Limbaugh ditto-head. But the ignorant base eats it up. And they’re usually the ones sitting in church every Sunday soaking up selfishness, hatred, and bigotry and calling it Christianity, too.

  17. MorganLF says:

If assault weapons were banned, then these nuts would kill less people. Simple. Getting help is not the answer when one clip fires 100 rounds a second. Why is that legal?

The NRA and the republicans are outta order letting the assault weapons ban lapse, THEY need psych Evals.
