Obama Trapped in Muslim Mudslide

By Yul

For a fellow black cat, President Obama sure doesn’t seem to have my surefootedness nor an ability to land on his feet when he gets himself into a jam, as he did on August 13 during a dinner at the White House for Muslim leaders to honor their holy month of Ramadan. In a prepared speech, he brought up the proposed mosque 2 blocks from Ground Zero and said

“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the . . . right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.

“This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure.”

It certainly sounded like he has no problem with that mosque. So naturally, it gave the right-wing wackos reason to scream, “See, what did we tell you? He’s a closet MUSLIM! One of THEM!”

So the next day, Obama tried to backtrack by saying…

“I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there. I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.”

He’s beginning to remind me of that Woody Allen character, Zelig, who would try to fit in everywhere by morphing into whatever type of person he was with.

I agree with Adele that if Muslims want to build a “community” center, fine. But making it a mosque intentionally excludes everybody but, uh, Muslims.

Obama certainly could have handled it better and sounded like he wasn’t caving to extremism. Michael Graham of the Boston Herald eloquently provided the words Obama could have and should have said.

Hi! Our friend kstreet607 at The Fifth Column http://kaystreet.wordpress.com has had some good posts at her site on this topic. Mom and I are so tired of the GOP fussing every time that President Obama scratches his bum and they don’t agree with how he does it. We both feel the mosque/cultural should be built there. Heck, there is a quiet little mosque that has been in the area long before the World Trade Center was even built. There was a GOP pundit on with Joe Scarborough who said the GOP fussing about this and wanting to go against freedom of religion as an American value for anyone is akin to giving in to Al Queda. We almost fell off our chair when Morning Joe criticized Newt Gingrich for calling the proposed building the same as building a concentration camp. As kstreet pointed out, we don’t hear a single GOP word on the fact that a block from the proposed building site on that sacred ground near Ground Zero is a New York Dolls strip club. Yes, and the GOP, when they come to Manhattan to protest and bloviate on the mosque site can relax after a hard day of photo-ops and scoring political points can go worship at the church of T & A as they are known to do. Just ask the RNC. After all, remember those other photo-ops, including Dubya himself with the first responders on the smoking rubble of Ground Zero *They will hear us loud and clear!*? Well, now that many of those quote *American Heroes* which they are, are dying, guess who refused to grant them free health care as they are dying with bloody sputum-filled lungs and many symptoms of that *safe* air they were told by the GOP Baby Bush EPA that they were breathing? Why! It’s that f’n lying, hypocritical, white racist, pray-as-long-as-it’s-in-my-GOP-supporting-prosperity-preaching-Christian-megachurch GOP bunch of assholes!

This time I am talking about my human mom, not me as Tuxi’s mom. However, Tuxi, as a black and white cat says *Barack Obama needs to hitch up his newly-found cojones that are dragging on the ground after this reiteration (not refudiation) and tell the GOP, *You heard what I said! I’m tired of you and your birther, breeder, anchor baby, death panel, hypocritical, freedom-of-religion-as-long-as-it’s-Christian, BULLSHIT! I was elected in November 2008-not you assholes! And I’m tired of you criticizing every time I scratch my ass and try to do something to help the country! Does the Party of No have a platform and ideas to help the country? Hell, no! All you do is try to top each other saying the stupidest damn things! Just Shut Up!* If he said all that, the GOP would have that pissed president speech they wanted!* Tuxi

If we’re going to question the mosque and cultural center’s use, then why don’t we question the use of all the Christian churches that are functioning as GOP voting recruitment centers and are more interested in pushing their political views than helping the poor. And if they are doing the political thing, then take away their tax exemption. Take Dubya and his religion for instance as how the Christian church influenced some of his decisions. He said he prayed and talked to God before launching the Iraq War. OK. Did God tell him to lie? To send over 4,000 of our soldiers to death over the WMD lie? Did God tell him to send thousands of Iraqi citizens to their death? Now that the last soldiers are heading into Kuwait, ask Dubya to ask God who won. It’s still Dubya’s war. So Dubya, what good did it do? You ruined infrastructure that alot of your friends are getting rich on no-bid contracts to rebuild. What does your God say about greed and war profiteering? Now that the soldiers have left, US private security firms are going to try to keep order. Good luck with that! So Dubya, did God tell you to reward that Christian buddy of yours from Blackwater who has made a real killing from this war? Yeah, Dubya and his God-a heckuva job you’ve done there!

Joanaroo, you are really on a roll! I agree wholeheartedly with you that the GOP are a bunch of hypocrites and using the NYC mosque to push their own Christian fanatic agenda. Rudy Guliani was on the Today Show this morning talking about it. I know. Rudy who?

Even though you two didn’t put it in the same words, you and Adele (cat, not human) have the same idea. Adele said in an earlier post that there should be NO religious buildings at all. If all these religions are really into reaching out and helping people, then make their churches places where ANYBODY feels welcome to come, no strings attached.

As it turns out, nearly 70% of New Yorkers and almost as many people around the country think the mosque near Ground Zero is a bad idea. Yes, Muslims are legally allowed to build it there, but SHOULD they? That’s the question they need to ask themselves. If 70% of the people around them will hate it, maybe so much that they will try to vandalize or destroy it and kill people in the process, why create the target?

This is the PERFECT time for Muslims to show that they are really peace-loving and conciliatory, and not out to rub salt into the wound, and I think they are blowing it big-time.

THAT’S what Obama should have said, but instead he tried to play professor and came off sounding like he was talking out of both sides of his mouth. He KNOWS the Republicans are unable/unwilling to grasp fact or fine shades of meaning, yet he handed them the ammunition to blast him with.

I can’t think of a better neighbor for this proposed mosque than a strip club. How about a few porn shops, peep shows and liquor stores? Perhaps the Muslim vanquard would re-think their choice of location.

  6. catsworking says:

Zappa, what a good idea! All those poor vendors trying to make an honest living peddling porn who got kicked out of Times Square when they made it family-friendly could reopen near the new mosque. Before you know it, the faithful would have to carry sticks to fend off the drunks and the hookers.
