First Cats Soon to Be Extinct

By Adele

The current First Cat, India Bush, passed away on January 4 in the White House, and Bill Clinton’s former cat, Socks, is nearing the end of his ninth life.

India was 18 years old and had been with the Bushes since she was a kitten. An obituary finally confirmed that India was female, although they billed her as “Willard” in her nemesis Barney’s last Christmas video, where she appeared in one scene and was ignored by everyone but daughter Barbara.

The official word is that the whole Bush family is “deeply saddened” by the passing of their “beloved” cat, whom they usually referred generically to as “Kitty.”

Yeah, you can really feel the grief.

Former First Cat, Socks Clinton, who’s anywhere from 18 to nearly 20, was recently diagnosed with cancer of the jaw and is said not to have much time left. His current owner, Betty Currie, opted not to put Socks through invasive tests and treatments because he has other medical issues and his weight is already way down.

With the Obamas about to install another dog in the White House, this is a very disheartening time for all American Domestic Shorthairs.

(Update: Here are several very good photos of India.)

So sorry to hear of this news. But at least both cats were/are quite old; and Socks has definitely had a nice life with Betty Currie; sounds as if she has taken great care of him and given him a lot of love.

Mauigirl, we are also comforted by the fact that both India and Socks have had very long lives. One of the articles about Socks said that Betty Currie had contacted the Clintons and that Bill and Chelsea were going to try to visit Socks to say goodbye, and they told Betty to spare no expense in his care. So, even though they dumped him in favor of Buddy (who ended up getting hit by an SUV), they still think fondly of Socks. Socks probably lasted this long BECAUSE Betty Currie took him. Otherwise, he’d have probably ended up as roadkill.

…Any updates on Socks? It has now been 6 weeks since his fatal condiition was revealed to the public… is he ? I wonder about him daily… Socks was a beautiful FIRST KITTY…..Love to Socks Brenda

Brenda, we totally agree with you. The cat world will have a hole in it without Socks. He was a cat with real style. We haven’t heard anything else, although we didn’t know how much longer he could hold on because reports were that his weight was already down to about 6 lbs. We’ve been praying for him.
