Has Anthony Bourdain Had a Facelift?

By Karen

Cats Working reader, Merrida, has suggested that Anthony Bourdain had some “work” done to minimize the 20+ year spread in age between him and his wife Ottavia. Could it be true?

He could certainly afford it. Forbes just revealed that Bourdain is the 10th highest paid celebrity chef, pulling in $1.5 million a year. That’s quite a feat, since he hasn’t even been a chef since his book, Kitchen Confidential, hit the bestseller list in 2000.

I’ve been watching the new episodes of No Reservations closely and, frankly, he doesn’t look any better (or worse) to me.

See for yourself: Here’s a close-up that Drive-Thru blogger Cinnamon Cooper snapped of Bourdain just last week while he was filming NR in Chicago.

I see a wrinkled forehead, crow’s feet, puffiness under the eyes, a bit of sag in the jowls. If some plastic surgeon did any of that, he needs to be sued for malpractice.

I’d be disappointed if Bourdain resorted to such artifice to hang on to the shreds of his youth. He strikes me as a man who’d see his wrinkles and bags as trophies won after too many hours under the blazing suns of exotic places, and proof of a life lived well – and hard.

But if Tony’s even contemplating plastic surgery, I suggest he check out the once-sexy Peter O’Toole, who has been rendered a sad, smooth caricature of himself:

Cat I often try to think why this guy is so dammed attractive. There are shots where he looks tired and craggy and then he just breaks into that slightly snaggle toothed smile…and I melt.

Key is the height. I love long tall lanky dudes (a la Clint Eastwood) He was made for jeans, boots and leather jackets but when I see him is a suit..hubba hubba! The truth is he is handsome in a manly not pretty way. Oh lets face it; tall, trim, tan, lots of hair just screams VIRILITY. He may have had a peel and some teeth bleaching but not much else. In older Cooks Tour shows pre salt and pepper hair there were times he looked a bit oily, skin a bit pocked & pale big earring sorta like an ex-junkie.(!) He now looks, dare I say it? Healthy! So I don’t think he’s had work (maybe a little teeth bleaching). But when I go see him in Atlantic City I’ll be looking really, really close…close as I can.

Where is he going to be in Atlantic City?

Morgan, you are so right on all counts, and I think you hit the nail on the head in describing his virile allure. His height holds charm for me, too, and makes him look good in anything he puts on his back. I particularly love those rare occasions he puts on a coat and tie. So dashing.

I agree with you that he is looking healthier lately. It does seem that Ottavia is taking very good care of him, skull tattoo notwithstanding. From the photo above, he seems to have lost the earring in the left ear, too.

Daniel he will be at Caesar’s Palace on Sunday 10/12/08 at one PM there are still tix available. I am wait listed for the VIP seats where after the lecture we dine on a meal he prepares with the hotel staff, swoon….they are a reasonable $150 but the lecture is a mere $25. I am planning on taking the next day (Columbus Day) off…to recover.

Damn the luck! This past Friday, I’d planned to meet a friend at Hot Doug’s, but an earlier dentist appointment caused me to bow out. Missed a chance to see Bourdain in Chicago. I can’t imagine that Tony’s had a facelift; not only is there no visual evidence, but I just can’t see it. His style has never been based on classical good looks, and it’s served him just fine.

If any of you Bourdainiacs haven’t read his latest Notes From the Road blog on the No Reservations site, you’re missing a great post; it’s about food porn. This Monday, the show is set in Spain, and I suspect we’ll see Ottavia; Tony posted on Michael Ruhlman’s blog about the Spain trip, and he talked about having dinner with his wife at Arzak in San Sebastian.

Thanks for the tip on the Spain episode! If Ottavia was with him, maybe Ariane was as well and we’ll catch a glimpse of her. She’s 16 months old now. Do babies start to walk by then?

I’ve got some catching up to do. Haven’t read his latest blog post, nor watched the Tokyo episode. That’s on the agenda for this evening.

  7. Deb says:

I think he just looks healthier than before. It looks like he gained a few pounds since he quit smoking (in a good way). He looks less gaunt. That will improve skin tone as well.

  8. Adele says:

Ariane should certainly be walking and saying a few words (I suspect both in English and Italian) by now. I wonder, though, if she could make it through a long dinner, where her parents, or at least her father, are cosuming quantities of alcohol.

My cat, Alice, would like to point out that she walked within days after birth and was potty-trained almost immediately — you know how superior cats can feel.

  9. catsworking says:

Alice is a lovely, civilized name for a cat. And it’s true that kittens are self-sufficient a lot sooner than babies.

I’m thinking we might catch a glimpse of Ariane toddling around in the background somewhere. If he’s having a fancy dinner with Ottavia, I didn’t expect them to bring the baby along.

  10. denyse says:

i think he’s put on a few pounds since he quit smoking last year…

  11. Bourdain really looks good in the first place. I don’t think he had anything changed with his appearance. If he did, it was just enhanced, I think, now changed. . .

  12. catsworking says:

I agree with you. Plastic. I don’t think it’s in Bourdain’s nature to resort to plastic surgery and he wouldn’t be so foolish as to think he could remove years that way.

I’m just thrilled that he’s never gotten lazy with the razor and experimented with growing a moustache or beard! It would kill his appeal for me.

  13. Zooey says:

Anthony Bourdain deserves a facelift if he wants one. The nature of his work requires him to look good. But he looks good as is.

  14. bethanderson says:

Is Ottavia Spanish? I thought she was Italian. How ironic after all his commentary, he ends up with someone who is essentially Mediterranean? I hope he’s finally happy. When I saw his show with Ted Nugent, it was funny in the sense that he seemed so out of his element. You know, you can still be a vegetarian and shoot.

  15. this is so outdated- O’Toole is dead- and Bourdain has divorced and moved on.

  16. catsworking says:

Welcome, Lyric, and agreed. This was written back in 2008. I’m wondering what ancient information you were searching for that led you way back here. Perhaps you’re unaware that all content on the internet isn’t updated and replaced every day. and that old blog post accumulate in things called “archives.”

I have moved on, and thanks for stopping be.
